23 September 2026 * UWC Campus

The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) brought colleagues from the Faculty of Law together at the Kader Asmal Moot Court for a Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact (SoE-SI) training session.

The workshop provided an opportunity to explore UWC’s Scholarship of Engagement Model and reflect on how existing teaching, research, partnerships and community-engaged initiatives contribute to societal impact. Through a mapping activity, participants connected their projects to different forms of scholarship and considered the evidence of impact emerging from their work.

A key example explored was the mentoring and training of paralegals, demonstrating how professional development, knowledge-sharing and engagement can respond to societal needs.

The session brought together colleagues from Public Law, Mercantile and Labour Law, CENTROW, and Criminal Justice & Procedure, creating space for cross-departmental reflection and shared learning.

The training forms part of the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDP)-funded project, Strengthening the Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact (SoE-SI) and was facilitated by Dr Samantha van Schalkwyk, Acting Director of the Community Engagement Unit, and Mr Ridwaan Mallum, Digital Transformation Specialist & Enterprise Solutions Architect.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Prof. Jacques de Ville, Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Dr Delecia Beyers, Community Engagement Coordinator, Faculty of Law, for their support, as well as to all colleagues who took part in the discussions and activities.
