CE & Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact at the UWC About Us Office of the Director: Community Engagement Unit Prof Priscilla Daniels It gives me great pleasure in welcoming you to our Virtual Community Engagement Resource Centre in our efforts to support and enhance a Scholarship of Engagement at the UWC. Today, universities are worldwide expected and required to make a fundamental contribution to the development of civil society and human capital – along with further development of scholarly and academic activity – this is evidential in the three-part legislated role of universities – teaching & learning, research and service of which the latter is often seen as ‘community engagement’ (CE). We trust that you will benefit from this resource centre and hope to see you in person at some of our training and exhibition Events in the near future. We welcome your feedback and look forward in growing this resource centre so that it can provide you with all the resources and tools that you might require for your journey towards 'Excellence in Community Engagement at the UWC ''. Strategic Alignment Our Mission Who we are ? Our Vision What we aspire to be ? The CEU facilitates community engagement opportunities that enhances and promotes the scholarship of engagement through equitable partnership and citizenry to promote sustainable communities. Critical citizenship & civic responsibility (citizenry) : A relationship and interaction with local and global communities and the environment. Social justice : Commitment to acknowledging our past and confronting issues of oppression, racism and discrimination through developing sustainable partnership. Equity : Recognition of the knowledge inherent within communities and accepting the unique strengths and shared responsibilities that each partner provides to enhancing the scholarship of community engagement at UWC. Lifelong learning : Commitment to collaborative and individual learning and critical reflection. The CEU Team What they do ? The CEU aspires to be a leading partner in the development of citizenry through equitable and sustainable collaborations, reflecting an engaged unit within UWC. Boyer’s (2008) four-model scholarships best describes this pivotal role of CE: Scholarship of Teaching (transmitting, transforming & extending knowledge); Scholarship of Discovery/Inquiry (investigation of new knowledge & contributing to the field – research); Scholarship of Application (applying knowledge in broader context, linking theory and practice – service); and Scholarship of Integration (making connections across disciplines – CE integrated into all forms of scholarship). ceu.uwc.ac.za | Community Engagement at the University of the Western Cape Welcome to the CE Platform The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) invites you to utilise this scholarship of engagement platform as a tool to support you with the alignment of your efforts and initiatives to that of the UWC Community Engagement Framework and the enhancement of your scholarship of engagement in your School, Faculty, Department, Centre, Division and Unit. The UWC recognises the importance of social responsibility and civic (civil society) engagement; this is especially reflected in the strategic decisions made at executive level to engage in partnership initiatives that laid the foundation for the development of the CEU. The importance of engaging society and essentially developing a scholarship of engagement that encompasses and facilitates the development of graduate attributes reflects UWC’s history and ethos. The CEU is responsible for the facilitation and coordination of community engagement, at the UWC, in all its forms and as it is recognised and legislated as one of the three core responsibilities (teaching, research and community service) of higher education. The National Plan for Higher Education, (2001), emphasises the need for “...responsiveness to regional and national needs, for academic programmes, research, and community service...” The CEU aligns with Butin's (2007) engagement types and Boyer’s (2008) scholarship of engagement model which refers to community engagement as a process that involves an evolution and transformation of knowledge as opposed to the simple transfer of information from one learning partner to another. ceu.uwc.ac.za | Community Engagement at the University of the Western Cape Welcome to the CE Platform The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) facilitates community engagement opportunities that enhance and promote the scholarship of engagement through equitable partnerships and citizenry to promote sustainable communities. Our commitment to community engagement with societal impact is reflected in the history and ethos of the UWC. As this university embraces its proud history in the anti-apartheid movements, it is committed to linking this proud past to an exciting future grounded in excellence with local, regional, and international relevance. The scholarship of engagement relates to the wide range of ‘work’ (i.e. community engagement) that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) do in partnership with different ‘communities’ (e.g. scholarly community, student community, civil society, and international community). HEIs have a longstanding tradition of teaching, research, and community engagement. Globally, contemporary HEIs are required to make a fundamental contribution to the development of civil society, infused by relevant, innovative scholarly research and academic endeavours, steeped in the three-part legislated role of HEIs. Community engagement is the pivotal point that feeds into and from teaching and research, and the links between these three legislative roles are equally important based on partnership and inclusivity.
