Faculty of CSH SoE-SI Training
7 October 2026 * UWC Campus (School of Public Health)
UWC’s Community Engagement Unit (CEU) hosted another Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact (SoE-SI) training with the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences (CHS) on 7 October 2026. It was wonderful to have colleagues from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of Children, Families and Society; Social Work; Dietetics and Nutrition; Occupational Therapy; and Public Health come together for the session, bringing diverse disciplinary perspectives into the conversation.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Samantha van Schalkwyk, Acting Director of the Community Engagement Unit, and Mr. Ridwaan Mallum, Digital Transformation Specialist & Enterprise Solutions Architect. The training covered the Senate-approved Scholarship of Engagement Framework, the UWC Scholarships model, and a navigation of the Scholarship of Engagement web portal.
The session sparked a valuable conversation about how the Scholarship of Engagement can help colleagues recognise, articulate, and showcase the significance of the work they are already doing with students and communities. Discussions explored bringing indigenous community voices and reflections into teaching, creating greater visibility for interdisciplinary and collaborative projects, and using creative approaches for the Scholarship of Application to make engaged work more accessible. Colleagues also shared important ideas for embedding the Scholarship of Engagement more meaningfully within everyday academic practice across the CHS faculty.
Another valuable opportunity to learn, exchange ideas, and shine a light on the meaningful social impact work taking place across the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences. Thank you, Prof. Shaheed Mogammad Soeker , Deputy Dean, Clinical and Community Engagement (CHS) and Prof. Anita Padmanabhanunni (Dean, CHS) for your continued support and collaboration. Thank you to UWC Faculty of Community and Health Sciences (FCHS)colleagues for your continued support and participation!
