The Community Engagement Unit (CEU) held a Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact (SoE-SI) training session with colleagues from the Faculty of Natural Sciences on 5 November 2026.The training forms part of the University Capacity Development Grant (UCDP)-funded project, Strengthening the Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact (SoE-SI).

The session introduced participants to UWC's Scholarship of Engagement Model and provided guidance on using the  Community Engagement Unit’s Scholarship of Engagement web portal to capture and showcase their community-engaged activities and social impact. The training was facilitated by Dr Samantha van Schalkwyk, Acting Director of the Community Engagement Unit, and Mr Ridwaan Mallum, Digital Transformation Specialist & Enterprise Solutions Architect.

During the session, colleagues explored UWC's Scholarship of Engagement Model and discussed how their teaching, research and community engagement activities contribute to society. They also took part in a mapping activity,  through which they linked their work to the different scholarships. The session provided an opportunity for colleagues to share their social impact projects and learn more about how their work connects with the needs of communities.

The training was attended by colleagues representing various departments within the Faculty of Natural Sciences, including Earth Sciences, Medical Biosciences, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, and  Chemical Sciences. Their participation provided an opportunity to share experiences across different disciplines and highlight the diverse ways in which their academic work contributes to communities and society.

The CEU thanks Prof. David Holgate, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and all faculty colleagues for their support and participation. We appreciate the opportunity to engage with the faculty and look forward to continuing our work together to strengthen and showcase community-engaged initiatives at UWC.
